Development activities in a region are highly dependent on the availability of natural
resources in the region, for example the development of Malang City as an education city. To
further maximize efforts to renew natural resources in the city area, one of the efforts that can
be done is to optimize the public cemeteries by conducting testing in the Sociological and
Ecological field. The research included social tests, spatial tests, and soil quality tests. The
purpose of this study is to identify and develop natural resources at public cemeteries and
provide recommendations for developing green open spaces at public cemeteries. Method of
this research uses a descriptive type of research with a qualitative approach. From the results, it
is known that most people agree with optimization of the public cemeteries and the community
are also ready to participate in the optimization process. Public cemeteries in Malang City can
be developed into green open spaces, flora preservation sites, tourist sites, educational
facilities, and plantations. Recommendations for optimizing natural resources in accordance
with the conditions of public cemeteries in Sukun, Kasin and Samaan are plantations of fruit
trees in pots (tabulampot) because in practice tabulampot does not require extensive land. And
recommendations that can be used for cultivation in the public cemeteries are ginger, coffee,
cocoa, and Lamtoro.
